CHARLENE LASSEN RIVERS CONTEMPORARY ACRYLIC LANDSCAPES
|

I like to describe my paintings as contemporary landscape.
Through the use of abstraction, intense color and spontaneous
design I attempt to create and imaginative world grounded in the
beauty of the landscape around me. Repetition of color, images
and a black background are used to create rhythm throughout the
piece. I also want my work to reflect warmth and humor. My
subject matter has been the Pacific Northwest (Oregon) where I
have spent most of my life. My first winter in Arizona is
reflected in my paintings depitcting a southwest theme.
My medium is acrylic on canvas. I begin by using photos and
drawings collected on location. I also add elements of
imagination. I prepare my canvas by priming it black. I do a
compositional sketch on paper and proceed to draw with chalk on
canvas. I fill the entire canvas with mostly pure paint colors
from the tube. I do 2-3 layers of basic colors. Using glazes and
more custom shades I pull the painting together. I then cover
the entire painting with a glaze of cobalt blue and a layer of
clear matte.
My work can be seen at Columbia Art
Gallery in Hood River, Oregon. Also I am on
the web sites of Xanadu Gallery in
Scottsdale and Galiara in San Francisco.
Also I can be contacted on this web site

Some of my new paintings are abstract with a
free line drawing of black paint deciding the
compostiion. Also the two ochre/brown paintings
are memories of African Mud Cloth designs.
